I’m sure by now you’ve seen an awful looking roof that is stained with black or brown streaks.  Ever wonder what it is?  It’s actually an algae called (Gloeocapsa magma) and it feeds on the limestone filler that is added to asphalt shingles.  This algae will be more common on your homes northern side or shaded area due to limited sunlight.  This lack of sunlight allows the roof to retain moisture longer, which creates a perfect environment for this algae to grow.

 

This algae is not only an eyesore, it is harmful to your roof.  If left untreated, it can cause staining, and even shorten the life of the roof.

 

Lichen and Moss are forms of  fungus that may be feeding on your roof as well.  You may notice them as actually a growth on your roof.  Both Lichen and Moss can cause serious damage to your roof within several years, if left untreated.
